Motorists are being warned of havoc on the roads on Monday as snow turns into ice following a weekend wintry blast. Hundreds of schools are due to be closed at the start of the working week following a cold night which saw temperatures drop as low as -11.6C (11F) in Chillingham Barns, Northumberland. A chilly day is forecast - and yellow warning for ice is in place for most of Wales and central parts of England - while on Monday night temperatures could drop as low as -15C (5F).

London 'grooming gang' exposed as police warn abuse happening across the UK
Police believe they have exposed a new grooming gang in London as officers warn widespread abuse is taking place across the country. Four girls between the age of 13 and 15 have reported being raped by a group based around a McDonald’s in Stratford, triggering a crackdown that has so far identified at least 30 potential victims. Detectives believe the number will grow as they appeal for others to come forward, after arresting three boys and three men in Stratford.
Ireland issues warning to David Davis over Brexit agreement
The Irish government has issued a warning to David Davis over suggestions the agreement reached with the EU over the Irish border may not be "legally enforceable" and was merely a "statement of intent." Mr Davis told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that the joint agreement between London and Brussels published on Friday might not be enacted if no free trade agreement was reached between the two sides, casting into doubt important reassurances over the border between Northern Ireland and the republic.

Labour is considering moving the Bank of England to Birmingham as part of plans to rebalance the economy and strengthen the regions. A report commissioned by Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell has concluded that the bank’s London base is “unsatisfactory and leads to the regions being underweighted in policy decisions.” Part of its recommendations include moving “some functions” to Birmingham.
Police failing to attend one in nine domestic violence incidents, figures show
The number of domestic violence incidents going unattended by police is soaring, with the worst performing forces now missing a quarter of call-outs, damning statistics obtained by The Independent reveal. The proportion of incidents where officers failed to show up more than doubled between 2012 and 2016 – from 5 per cent of cases to 11 per cent – responses to Freedom of Information requests from police forces across England showed.
Disgraced celebrity publicist Max Clifford dies
Disgraced former celebrity publicist Max Clifford, 74, has died in hospital after collapsing at Littlehey Prison in Cambridgeshire, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice has said. The 74-year-old collapsed twice in two days after cleaning his cell this week, it had been reported. He was serving an eight-year jail sentence for historic sex offences. He was jailed in 2014, having been convicted on eight counts of indecent assault against four girls then aged between 14 and 19.
